In order to keep your shed or fence in good condition for as long as possible, it is essential that you maintain the wood panels. Garden sheds and fence endure a lot, withstanding storms, snow, and sun; all of these elements can harm the wood, causing it to deteriorate and split.

Types of preservers

There are two types of shed preservers available. Those that are solvent-based and those that are water-based. In spite of the fact that they have the same essential components, the two varieties operate quite differently from one another.

Solvent-based preserver

White spirit makes up around 75% of a preserver that is based on a solvent. Because of this, they exude an odour that is far more potent and enduring. Stains for wood that are solvent-based are also less susceptible to the effects of the weather. They have a longer touch-dry time, which can range anywhere from two hours to six hours. You won’t be able to reapply until the following day, so be patient.

Water-based preserver

In contrast, a water-based substitute only has roughly 10% white spirit. It is thus more environmentally friendly than its solvent-based alternative. The best time to apply is on a dry, temperate day, but they dry much more quickly. After an hour, you can ‘touch dry’ your shed. In the following couple of hours, it will be ready for an overcoat.

Oil-based exterior treatments

Most wood preservatives can be sealed with wood oil for a watertight finish. They give the wood an attractive sheen and provide excellent protection from the elements. Preventing cracking, splitting, and warping is a secondary benefit of using oil-based exterior treatments. It’s great for both new and old wood, as it feeds, seals, nurtures, and protects most types of wood, including decks.

The application of an oil-based therapy should be delayed by 24 to 48 hours after applying a preserver, depending on the type of preservative you’ve chosen. Wood oils come in a variety of colours and translucence levels. To keep the coating working effectively, apply it once a year.
